If you follow the news cycle, it is easy to be anxious—to feel as though we are spiraling out of control in the most evil, degenerate society ever. This current society dismembers and sells baby body parts; the life of a lion, although worth much, is valued more than that of an unborn child; the people who are sworn to protect us are either undermined or corrupted; the political leaders are blackmailed, coerced, and corrupt; judges are compromised. Families are torn, redefined and under attack, and everything we used to call decent is demonized. Freedom of speech and religion costs livelihoods. Christian religion is being revised by the state to reflect political, not biblical, alignment. To the Christian believer, it feels like the end of the world is striding to overtake us. I have two words for you:
Even though it feels like we are blindly navigating uncharted, evil waters we are not. Ecclesiastes 1:9 tells us that even in this advanced society, there is nothing new, “That which has been is that which will be, And that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.” Throughout the book, the writer, King Solomon, talks about having vast riches, pleasures, possessions, worldly wisdom and knowledge, and comes to this in the very end of his book: “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.”
When the world was so evil that God couldn’t bear to have it go on the same way he brought the flood. How difficult must it have been to lead a righteous life in that time. How horrible to know that your family is the only one worth saving in an entire planet. Those were evil times, and the flood has come and gone. Many civilizations have arisen and fallen since then, and yet the world is still here.
For now, our civilization still stands but seems to be on the way out. This is not uncharted territory. God has seen many civilizations rise and fall, and he has been in control the entire time. So when you see Pima County Supervisors choose to deny the good folks who elected them the opportunity to elect our next Sheriff, take heart. When you see police officers and property managers running illicit prostitution rings, take a deep breath. When Border Patrol officers are not allowed to protect you and your loved ones from illegal immigrant criminals because of a corrupt administration, be not afraid. When your school superintendent unashamedly makes more than five times as much as the teacher who influences your child’s life, don’t despair. When you see double dipping cronyism keeping the sheriff’s deputies from getting a raise for over ten years, and blocking their chances for job advancement because retired cronies get rehired in what should be their positions, know that there is nothing new under the sun.
So what should we do when the sun shines and the rain falls on the just and the unjust? Drag those elected officials who would do wrong out into the light. Expose them. Find new candidates, and run the cronies out of office. I believe there are more of us than there are of them. It’s time for course correction in Pima County. I continually say that change starts right here, right now. The evidence is continually piling up that we need change. The righteous preserve our society, but righteousness is not born of passivity. As Matthew 11:12 says, “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it.” It is the job of the righteous to fight valiantly to advance what is right. And that’s nothing new either.
